I realize that hypostatic abstraction is a topic for chapter 6, but since I've just received the latest online issue of 'Entropy', I thought I'd refer to an article in it which, in my view, can be analyzed as a type of hypostatic abstraction (movement from singular to general). My point is, since we are discussing the nature of the dicisign, then that sign, and its ability to generate continuity of type as well as the nature of that specific process of continuity-generation, is of interest.
Obviously self-organization, or control over morphology (to maintain continuous sign-generation both of type and token) is vital to maintain matter in the universe. Controlling and promoting habit-formation of type (which is Thirdness) is a key action. There are three dicisigns that promote a particular mode of habit-formation, one that directly links real local individual existences to other real local individual existences (Secondness). The dicisign is the only mode in the ten classes that is embedded (both input/output or Object and Interpretant Relations) in this local physical individual existentiality. Six of the other ten signs actually increase entropy in their 'output' Interpretant (in a mode of Firstness), opening the morphology up to the diversity of potentiality, of uncertainty. But the dicisign insists on this direct physical connection to the actual instance. As such, I wonder about its capacity for novelty - which is why I wonder if the Rhematic Indexical Legisign also plays a role. And again, I wonder about the Dicent Symbol, since I confine the symbol to consciousness. Entropy Methods in Guided Self-Organization Mikhail Prokopenko and Carlos Gershenson Entropy 2014 16(10) 5232-5241 Abstract: Self-organisation occurs in natural phenomena when a spontaneous increase in order is produced by the interactions of elements of a complex system. Thermodynamically, this increase must be offset by production of entropy which, broadly speaking, can be understood as a decrease in order. Ideally, self-organisation can be used to guide the system towards a desired regime or state, while "exporting" the entropy to the system's exterior. Thus, Guided Self-Organisation (GSO) attempts to harness the order-inducing potential of self-organisation for specific purposes. Not surprisingly, general methods developed to study entropy can also be applied to guided self-organisation. This special issue covers abroad diversity of GSO approaches which can be classified in three categories: information theory, intelligent agents, and collective behavior. The proposals make another step towards a unifying theory of GSO which promises to impact numerous research fields. Edwina
