These days it sometimes seems
talk about thought
is predicated on the notion that it is
an entirely mechanical process

The mind is a most marvellous machine
but unlike a computer
the mind is also conscious
meaning incipiently free to
denote, choose, designate
and all the other things that
add up to the scintilla
of freedom which is our most
precious and sacred treasure
for it enables us to choose the very values
that determine good and evil in action

This consciousness is known
by an awareness of its presence
its operation and its inherent capacity
which is to guide and enable action
(which includes thought)

To speak of complex mental
dynamics as if this island of
freedom and awareness and control
is nonexistent
is a sad diminution
of who we are
and what we are about
