Both of those lines are contrary to anything Peirce would have said or approved. Peirce's First Rule of Reason: "Do not block the way of inquiry." That means that no hypothesis should be ruled out in advance. It may be a dead end. Or maybe not. But sometimes the act of stating a bad hypothesis may suggest something better. Second line: The joke about "counting the number of angels on the head of a pin" was stated by ignorant people who were trying to ridicule Scholastic logic and philosophy. Peirce had a high regard for Scholastic logic, and he took pride in having the largest number of manuscripts on medieval logic in the Boston area. John
