Editor’s Note

With the development of Peircean semiotics since the 1980s, a new field
beyond culture and logic has been established by studies on semiosis:
biosemiotics. In biosemiotics, the interaction between life and the
environment leads the pre-linguistic structure of meaning into the scope of
semiotics, providing a new approach for biology and, more importantly,
promoting the study of cultural semiotics.
In the section “Biosemiotics”, interactions between these different fields
are discussed. Han-liang Chang examines Aristotle’s categorisation and
traces its reception and survival in academic history from the perspective
of biological taxonomy. Zhou Liqian ponders the new paradigm provided to
biology by biological semiotics to deal with the crisis of Neo-Darwinism.
Timothy Ireland discusses the possibility of biosemiotics of architecture
from the theory of Frederick Kiesler. Han Lei explores humans’ Umwelt and
species-specificity in the context of Laozi.
Semiotic thought in Chinese traditional culture is a constant focus. In the
section “Traditional Semiotic Thoughts in China”, Xie Qingguo and Zhang Dan
explore the signifying mechanism and cultural connotation of bronzes. Zhu
Dong and Li Guiquan discuss Tao from the perspective of semiotics but with
different focuses: Zhu compares Taoism with Marxist semiotics, and Li
examines the way of existence and semiosis of Tao. Su Zhi explains the
image-taking thought and the characteristics of codes in Zhouyi based on
weak coding theory. The classics and philosophy of traditional culture are
the treasures of Chinese semiotic studies.
The new section “Philosophical Semiotics” provides a platform for scholars
to explore meaning theory from multiple dimensions. In this section, Fu
Feixiong elaborates on the origin and innovation of Ricoch’s discourse
theory. Dong Minglai studies Husserl’s analysis of presentation and
judgement as intentional acts expressed by name and assertion. Tan Guanghui
discusses the features of emotion in the sign-text from the coordination of
two axes. He Yijie takes noise as the meaningless elements of signs and
explores its communicative mechanism. In addition, in the section “Theory
and Application”, our contributors explore the narrative, translation and
communication of signs. We will continue to keep a close eye on the above
fields to continually further the development of semiotics.
