Finally seeing the word's spelling helps. I used to know a pale, blonde
woman who as a girl lived for some years in Hawaii and hung out with the
local indigenous, and she told me that they called whites what sounded
like "hollies" to me, and I just couldn't get the word right. It always
struck me that that the word sounded mellifluous as you say but somehow
she was able to include a note of contempt in it! - Best, Ben
