The review seems adequate. I could add to it
that besides that the author uses too small a
subset of the Peircean sign aspectual terms,
s(he) [Anne may go two ways in terms of gender]
does not pay attention to the gutter, although s(he) recognizes its effects:
From the review:
More interestingly, she claims that the
"still-images of actions" are also indexical,
because they only show a part of a broader
temporal whole action. This is probably the most
astute observation of the piece, yet receives
relatively little relative attention. This is a
key insight, and would be worth expanding on.

Will Eisner once wrote as I recall: The worst
crimes are committed in the gutter. , i.e. the
space between two panels that leaves room for the imagination of the reader.
The content of the gutter is potentially
involved in the overall sign or evolves in the
process of interpretation that results from the
clash between the incoming signs and what is
already contained in the interpreting sheet. The
co-incidence of the sign and what it calls
forth, points in the direction of contiguity or an indexical relation.
Eisner, Comics and Sequential art. Poorhouse
press, 1985 and McCloud, Understanding Comics.
Kitchen Sink press, 1993 go much deeper
than Magnussen. The semiotic distinctions however are only shown, not named.
A clear semiotic description of all issues
addressed in those works would demand the finer
distinctions of the Welby classification(s) and
the sub-categories of sign types distinguished
in the course of years. A frame for instance can
be looked at as a phemic sheet, cf CP 4.561,
sheets can be put tin different modalities, cf
Eisner, 1985, p. 44 (or tinctured).
But already at the elementary level the comic
book authors are more insightful, cf. McCloud,
1993 pp. 24,25. This Magritte example enables
some good points about the sinsign replica
sinsign distinction, amongst others.
Kind Regards,
