Hi Jacob,
Welcome to the list. Nowadays I only occasionally follow what's going
on. But I happened to read your mail. Which did arouse my interest
because I once, well, a long time ago, cherished the idea of giving a
paper on Peirce and Hegel. I had been reading " Die Phänomenogie des
Geistes" for a year or so, and then started with Peirce. After, While
reading Hegel, I had been telling to quite a bunch of Hegel devotees
here in Finland, that you get it all wrong with starting anything else
but that. Not that anyone believed, but I sure did make my ideas more
clear to myself.
I do not have - yet- the first volume on the chronological edition. So,
I don't know what essay the essay SPQR is. And, consequently, there's
nothing I can say about that essay. Which may be the case with some
other listers, as well.
You wrote:
My dissertation topic is on the concept of relation in Peirce and
Hegel, which means I'll be working on this till Doomsday.
Yeah, sure. But surely you must have a more specific question you
purport to answer, than just your topic?
Because of this personal history, I've been attentive to whatever
Peirce wrote on Hegel. Which has brought me great personal
satisfaction. Peirce agreed, you see. Which I found out long after
cherishing the hypothesis that what is valuable in Hegel is to be found
in Die Phänomologie.
If you stick just to your topic, it may well take till Doomsday. But do
you already have a more specified question? As I see it, you have to
take sides to put YOUR question. I can't see any meaningful manner of
treating the concept on "relationship" from a Hegelian standpoint and
then trying to connect it with Peirce. But the other way round is not
impossible at all. And would be most interesting.
Peirce is quite clear with his comments on Hegel. And there are not so
many of them. So if you side with Peirce with your question, which
means that you take Peirces concept of relation as a startingpoint,
along with Peirec's notions of Hegel, then it may not take till
Doomsday.
Anyway, best wishes to your work on your dissertation!

Greetings all,
Since I'm new to Peirce-l (and lists in general), allow me to
introduce myself. My name is Jacob Longshore; I'm a doctoral candidate
at the University of Leuven, Belgium. My dissertation topic is on the
concept of relation in Peirce and Hegel, which means I'll be working
on this till Doomsday.
After reading the last few posts, my question about secondary
literature should be a pretty easy one to answer: does anyone know of
articles treating Peirce's essay "SPQR" (W1:91-4)? I can't find
anything in the Philosopher's Index, but that may just be due to my
misuse. Anything, even a "No such animal" would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks, and best wishes to all.
cheers,
jacob
