A whole new world

In the words of the International Maritime Employers Committee (IMEC), it
and the Joint Negotiating Group and the International Bargaining Forum are
here to stay and are now part of the normal industrial scene.

Equally significant are the words of the David Cockroft

who says: "Ultimately, the ITF would like to see every flag of convenience
ship owned by a decent shipowner become part of the IBF agreement."

Just think about the implications of Mr Cockroft's statement.Sure he still
talks about "flags of convenience" rather than open registries but now the
ultimate aim is to get all "decent" owners of ships on such registers to
sign up to the IBF agreement.

Farewell, then, to notions of sweeping "flags of convenience" into the
dustbin of history. Taken together with the ILO "Super Convention" and the

IMO flag state performance audit the international shipping industry is
entering a vastly different era.

There will be a global
industry with internationally agreed working conditions and widely accepted,
but flexible, pay bargaining practices.

Okay, there is still a little further to go but the solid foundations are
now in place to ensure decent conditions and fair pay on the entire world
fleet.

Oh, and open registers are here to stay, and that's
official.
