Indonesian piracy lull ends
THE masters of two commercial vessels managed to fend off attempted
boardings by armed men in separate incidents in Indonesia waters last
Saturday, according to the latest weekly Piracy Report from the ICC
International Maritime Bureau. In one case shots were fired as a
relatively quiet spell in Indonesian waters ended following two weeks
of relative inactivity.

Six armed men wearing masks and black clothes in a grey coloured
speedboat approached a bulk carrier underway close to Mendanau
Island, in the Gelasa Strait off southern Sumatra. They fired at the
ship's superstructure and ordered the ship to stop. Instead the
master raised the alarm, sounded ship's whistle and took evasive
manoeuvres. The pirates fled.

Meanwhile off the northern tip of Sumatra, close to troubled Aceh
province, four boats carrying armed men approached a container ship
at speed. The crew mustered and activated fire hoses while the ship
increased speed. The boats broke off the attack.
