USCG issues ballast water treatment standard
(Mar 30 2012)
In a boost to ballast water treatment manufacturers and shipowners alike, the
US Coast Guard (USCG) has announced its final rule on ballast water management.
This rule establishes a standard for the allowable concentration of living
organisms in ballast water discharged from ships in US waters, as well as the
addressing the approval process for ballast water management systems.
According to ABS, this ballast water discharge standard is reportedly
consistent with that in the IMO's International Convention for the Control and
Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, adopted in 2004, which has
not yet entered into force.
However, some BWT manufacturers have said that the rules are far more stringent.
The final rule was published on 23rd March in the US Federal Register and will
become effective 90 days thereafter, ABS confirmed.
