No, I think it is a more fundamental and structural problem, namely the quiescence of the American working class that is a combination of long-standing accommodation to the system culturally/psychologically and the fear of struggle in a period when the boss can move production overseas. There has not been a major strike since the UPS in 1997. People seek individual solutions like training to be a programmer or moving to cities where the job market is more favorable. As I was discussing with a young leftist yesterday, Michael Moore's "Roger and Me" is essential viewing for understanding these issues. When Flint gets clobbered by deindustrialization, unemployed workers raise rabbits for food or pets. They move to Texas. They do just about everything except what they did in 1938. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list pen-l@lists.csuchico.edu https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
