If there has been no very clear meeting of minds on this thread, it is because
enough account has not been taken of the wealth of literature, the huge corpus of
theoretical and historical writing, which exists on what might be called the
Blautian side of the divide.
The points of congruence between the Brenner/Woods world view and the Blautian world
view are far slighter than appear obvious at first sight, while the differences are
more profound than similarities of usage and toponymy superficially and no doubt
erroneously suggest. I suspect that this is what Louis Proyect has been gently
hinting at. To make sense of this debate will require a few groundrules, or anyway a
more substantive and grounded discussion ab initio.
