I debated this essay with Jack Goldstone in H-World. Jack is
known as the author of a "remarkable and brilliant book", so says
one ad-man, called *Revolution and Rebellion in the Early Modern
World* (1991, pp1-608). Jack is an intelligent scholar; but I have to
this essay, as I think I demonstrated in the exchange, has little if
any analytical content. A revised version was published in the
American Historical Review; properly so I guess, for the essay is
strictly declamatory, that is declarative, which is just another word
for publicational.
