Dear Sid:

I'm sending you a translation of the letter that
appeared today in La Jornada. We think it can be
used as a model of similar ones to be sent to
Zedillo. Feel free to send it to pen-l.

Thanks

Mr. Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon
President of the United States of Mexico
Los Pinos, D.F
Mexico

Once again the supreme government lies to the
people of Mexico, in a way that reminds us of the
government's endless proclamations about the
strength of the Mexican economy. But this time the
consequences of the lies will be even more harsh,
and we do not want the people of Mexico to
experience them.

Initially you offered a negotiated solution to the
Chiapas conflict. But now you announce that you
have opted for a solution based on the use of
force. The history of authoritarian regimes shows
that they often stage frame-ups of their enemies as
pretexts to begin hostilities against.

The signers of this letter insist that you put an
end to all military and police activities in
Chiapas and open an honest and open dialogue with
the EZLN. It is our conviction that real compromise
based on authentic political negotiation offers the
only possible way to resolve this conflict and to
address the underlying economic, political and
social problems that have caused this
confrontation.

You and only you will be accountable for any
agression against our indigenous brothers, as well
as members of religious, social and political
organizations that oppose the use of force to solve
a five hundred year old problem.

We hope that you are still sensible enough to stop
a bloodshed in Mexico.
------
Also, it could help if letters could be sent to
Mexican embassies and consulates, asking them to
inform you about the fate of any prisoners taken by
the army and the police. Already there are at least
forty people arrested. Letters should also be sent
to the media.

The latter type of letters should ask to stop
violence against Mexican indigenous people and warn
against the violation of Human Rights in Mexico.
Last night, a group of policemen assaulted the
offices of CONPAZ (the National Comission for
Peace) and stole lots of documents. This NGO has
been very active in the defense of Human Rights in
Chiapas, their offices are located right in San
Cristobal, Chiapas.

I'll keep in touch.
Carlos
