To all
i have just finished reading a new book just published
called Paula by Isabel Allende who was the daughter of
Salvador Allende's brother. It is in essence her
autobiography but has graphic accounts of the 1974
events and the times immediately before that and after.
it is very distressing but worth reading if only to keep
our rage up and our thoughts focused. it documents how
the multinationals (many american) undermined the chilean
economy. there were constant false rumours of bank closures
and people were told to withdraw their money. crops were
burned and livestock slaughtered. essential raw materials and
spare parts were deliberately withdrawn from the market - like
truck tyres and pharmaceuticals for the hospitals.
it is published in australia by Flamingo but I suspect
internationally by Harper and Collins.
kind regards
bill
