This was not always true. If you examine the "household" in the
Homeric world (see M.I. Finley, *The World of Odysseus*)
it is mostly by examining the internal structure of households
(*oikoi* -- the greek root whence "economics") that  class
lines may be discerned. Don't know whether this is of any
use to you -- except it might underline the historicity of
"economic" formations.
