Jim and others,

On Polanyi: I don't recall a further alternative. Unfortunately my
copy of the book is on loan to someone at present, but if you can't
locate it yourself, I can retrieve it and check it out.

It is a source of some confusion that Karl Polanyi's daughter (not
grand-daughter) is called Kari (not Karl!) Polanyi Levitt. She is renowned in
Canadian political economy for her 1970 book 'Silent Surrender' on
the US corporate takeover of Canada.

BTW, the full ref of the book is:

ed. K Polanyi, C M Arensberg & H W Pearson, Trade and Market in the
Early Empires: Economies in History and Theory.

pub. Henry Regnery Co., Chicago, 1957 (Gateway ed. 1971)

Personally I find Karl Polanyi's The Great Transformation one of the
most continuously inspiring books in our whole field. It's been
particularly useful to me recently in helping to make sense of the
restoration of capitalism in Eastern Europe. It connects not only
political economy and history, but also academic inquiry and
political beliefs.
