to look into the mirror at themselves. Frankly, this is just cultural ar=
rogance. The rest of the world including Europe but especially East Asia =
finds American individualism extremist. Americans are drunk with unrestri=
cted freedom without personal responsibility. Compare America's major cit=
ies to their counterparts in Europe and East Asia. Violent crime, illegal=
drugs, garbage, and filth are associated with Los Angeles, New York, and=
Washington DC. By contrast, the streets in Paris, Singapore, Amsterdam, =
Berlin, Hong Kong, Tokyo are much cleaner and safer. Human rights also in=
cludes not being murdered for a one dollar bill. And the United States ha=
s the world's highest per capita prison population and is the largest con=
sumer of illicit drugs including cocaine and heroin. Over the long term, =
the enormous cost of maintaining the massive criminal justice system will=
sap the economic strength of America. Already, the state of California s=
pends more money on building prisons than on higher education.</FONT>

If we are culturally arrogant, then we certainly earned the right to be a=
fter bailing Europe & especially East Asia out in the second world wa=
r. How much cleaner and safer would Berlin, Amsterdam, and Paris be after=
fifty years of Nazi rule? How about Tokyo and Singapore under the imperi=
al Japanese? When East Asia & Europe came under threat of conquest wh=
o else was there but the culturally arrogant Americans. You call us cultu=
rally arrogant while at the same time consistently benefiting from Ameri=

emonstrators would be picketing across the street from the State Departme=

<p>The Chinese embassy has sent letters to Nightline requesting that ABC =
not broadcast any reports on human rights abuses in China. This will cre=
ate "difficulties". Indeed. =
<p>The Chinese government has served notice to the producers of "anti-Chi=
na" movies (12 years in Tibet, etc.) that their ability to do business in=
China will be curtailed. Of course, these companies have seen much of t=
heir work pirated by Chinese copycats. So, the only movies that won't ge=
t distributed for free are those that won't get distributed at all, for o=
bvious reasons.<br>

One thing I will say in defense however. In the U.S. we have systems and =
cultural prediliction to self appraisal and self critique. This often lea=
ds to improvement. From my experience here in Southeast Asia, there is a =
prediliction to avoidance of blame. Confession and accepting responsibilt=
y are scorned. While there are always exceptions I see these traits as be=
ing significant. Could you comment, in as much fairness as you can muster=

he early 80's that American big business has decided they can treat the A=
merican workers just like the workers in other third world countries. We=
have paid for our alleged "recovery" by a downgrading of the considerati=
on shown the average worker. We downgraded, we downsized, and then we st=
ill felt arrogant? Well, it isn't "we." =
<p>Americans should not be looking down their noses at foreign government=
s, when their own is entirely in the grip of interests as special as Sadd=
am Hussein himself. We have chemical weapons and biological weapons and =
nuclear weapons. These are at the ready for our commander in chief to use=
for his purposes. =
<p>So we go overseas and see a little repression and prosecute that. The=
only difference is that the kind we see in America is so sophisticated i=
t is often overlooked. =

When one talks about the culture of a country, it is almost impossible to=
escape too much generalization. People still talk about it because there=
always has been such a concept and, to start criticizing it, they must a=
ccept the existence of the stereotype like that, though not of the "natio=
nal culture" itself. Indeed, especially in larger countries, there are mu=
ltitudes of cultures within the national boundaries, and very often, seve=
ral different cultures coexist (in peace or in conflict) within one indi=
vidual.<br>
