The last RM conference, in 1996, was quite fine, and it was the event
that made me rethink my naive, kneejerk antipostmodernism -
specifically Judith Butler's plenary talk, which was eventually
published as "Merely Cultural." I know this essay irritates lots of
PEN-Lers, but it irritated me too on first hearing. But when I read
it several months later in manuscript, I realized she really had a
point. And the irritation was really a symptom that she was onto
something.

Looking forward to this conference in a few weeks.
