In Missouri, the former governor, Carnahan, ran for Senate but was killed in
a plane crash. It was too late to remove his name from the ballot. He was
elected. In the Canadian Senate no one would probably notice if an older
embalmed male occupied a seat in the Senate but I gather that in the US the
Senate is of more significance. The widow is to be appointed. Carnahan's
even more conservative opponent is contesting the election on the ground
that a dead person cannot be a resident of the state.
