This question exemplifies what I mean about socialist asceticism.

Just for the record, Marx thought it was agood thing to create new needs. In
the Manifesto, the creation of new needs is something that is credited to
the plus side of capitalism. His discussion of why, in the Paris Manuscripts
of 1844, repays close study. The short answer is that it implicates more
human powers in the satisfaction of those needs as well as the development
of the human personality. I think that is right. Moreover, from a
utilitarian view, the more needs we have that can be satisfied, the better.

CB: Yea, and the more needs we have that can't be satisfied the worse.

Obviously the key is to guarantee that the satisfaction of new needs proceeds at the
same pace as the development of the new needs. Marxism doesn't violate common sense.
