ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER IN WOODLAND, CA DENIED OPPORTUNITY TO HOST "CESAR
CHAVEZ DAY OF SERVICE & LEARNING" & COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS!

March 29, 2001

Dear Fellow Community Members,

We are writing to ask for your support for an outstanding elementary school
teacher, Ms. Maria Lucia Gomez, and the migrant parents of Whitehead
Elementary School who were denied the opportunity to host a "Cesar Chavez
Day of Service & Learning," a great mural project for the students at their
school, and their planned community service projects. Whitehead Elementary
School is located in Woodland, California (20 miles west of Sacramento).

The school administration and faculty voted on Wednesday, March 21st, NOT to
have a "Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning" despite the fact that Ms.
Gomez and a group of migrant parents had already submitted a grant proposal
to the California Commission on Improving Lives Through Service (CILTS) (See
http://www.cilts.ca.gov/) and were offered $7,940 for the wonderful events
they proposed to do at her school.

Their grant proposal included having a Chavez Day school celebration with
speakers and other activities to educate the students on the history of
Chavez and migrant workers in California. In addition, their grant proposal
included a mural project on the struggle of Chavez and migrant/cannery
workers, purchasing books on Chavez/farmworkers for their school library,
and community service projects such as a food and clothing drive for
laid-off cannery workers in Woodland (in collaboration with the California
Conservation Corps).

The CILTS Office informed Ms. Gomez that their grant proposal was the best
they received and therefore Ms. Gomez and the group of migrant parents were
offered $7,940 for these great activities/projects. She was the only
teacher who applied for such a grant in Woodland.

However, when she was going to file the grant proposal on January 19th, the
principal (upon finding out about it) ordered her not to leave the campus
and that a meeting would be held after school. At the meeting, the
principal and the head of personnel informed Ms. Gomez that she could file
the grant proposal, but ordered her not use the school name on the proposal.
Ms. Gomez and the group of migrant parents, called "English Language
Learners Committee," had to use the name "Woodland Rural Workers Project"
for the grant proposal instead. During one of the staff meetings some
teachers at Whitehead further stated that they did not want Chavez on the
mural project; the principal felt that a Mural highlighting Cesar E. Chavez
would bring
attention to our school and graffitti. One of the members of the PTA said
the he did not want any discussion about growers in any of the activities.

However, the principal added that a vote would be taken by the faculty
(which occurred on 3/21) regarding whether or not to have the "Chavez Day of
Service and Learning" and the other planned activities. On March 21st, the
vast majority of the administration and faculty offered almost no support
despite all the great work Ms. Gomez and the migrant parents had already
done and that the monies would already be granted to the school. According
to the principal, most teachers voted NOT to have a "Cesar Chavez Day of
Service and Learning" or the other planned activities.

Ms. Gomez strongly supports the Cesar Chavez Holiday and believes that it
would be a great benefit for ALL the students at her school. Ms. Gomez has
been teaching for 10 years and has an outstanding record as a teacher. In
her fourth grade class, she has already had some activities in anticipation
of the Chavez holiday. She would still like to have the events & activities
occur at her school.

That is why we are asking for your support of Ms. Maria Lucia Gomez, the
migrant parents of Whitehead Elementary, and the Cesar Chavez Holiday.

PLEASE WRITE, CALL, & FAX THE PRINCIPAL AND THE WOODLAND SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE
TO SUPPORT THE TEACHERS AND PARENTS OF WHITEHEAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHO WISH
TO HAVE THEIR CELEBRATION AND ACTIVITIES RELATING TO THE CESAR CHAVEZ
HOLIDAY. THEY URGENTLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!

LA UNION ES LA FUERZA. SI SE PUEDE!!!
OUR UNITY IS OUR STRENGTH. YES, IT CAN BE DONE!!!

                       Ciego Y Sordo

Entoncesssssss,
they don't want to hear about Cesar Chaves,
            with an E,
maybe they fear
      the UFW will put students
            on the huelga line,
or that their green, green grass
      will change into lechuga
            and compete with the growers,
they don't want no Si Se Puedes,
      it's easier to say,
            you can't do that,
to say ~ nonono,
      rapid fire negativity,
            blasting at a Brown sueno,
they ask,
      who is he anyway,
does he have a good right hook,
knowing they're making a joke
that falls flat on the eyes
            of Chican@ confrontation,
after all, he's just a grape picker,
      a strawberry stooper,
            a short hoe junky,
bad influence on future republicans,
      democrats in masks
and the well being of the overly rich,
they don't know
      the power of this aguila
or the span of his wings,
don't understand his grito
      or those who answer it
with marching feet and campesino beat,
don't know about la lucha,
      days of fast,
prayers to the dead wrapped in pesticide,
they don't understand those who gather faith,
      invest en los ninos
            with the face of truth,
they don't want to hear about Cesar Chavez,
      give him a birthday party,
but they sure would like to bust his pinata,
entoncesssssss, they turn their back
      to historia and sacrifice,
do a board vote to disappear Cesar Chavez, with an E.
