I want to thank the participants in this debate. Despite some
personal animosity and some occasional digs, the debate has gone
relatively smoothly.
I think that everyone has been hitting on some partial truths. I
haven't read Lenin's Development of Capitalism in Russia for over
20 years, but as I recall it, he did a masterful job of showing
how development was not a one-sided affair. In the process of
differentiation, somewhat left behind and some benefited. I
think that Doug came closest to making this point.
Nonetheless, this process can be brutal. And in many cases, the
losers far outnumber the winners. Lou seems to be stressing this
point.
In addition, what happens in Nicaragua or Mozambique or South
Korea will be different. Speaking in absolutes will be just as
misleading and as relying on averages to understand the process
of development.
