by ATTAC France On the day after the terrible events that have shaken the United States, Attac joins the American people in their mourning. The air suicide attacks that hit New York and Washington partake of a blind terrorism that no cause can justify. This crime, which is becoming an historic trial for the American nation, and beyond the deep emotion it arouses, nevertheless reflects processes that have been under way for decades, the state of the world, its growing inequalities and unresolved crises, and thus the despair and suffering that result from them. It also reflects the specific role played by the United States on the international arena. But it does so in the worst possible way, by assimilating a people to a State, and by assassinating thousands of innocents. Because we are part of those who, in a struggle against the devastating social effects of the neo-liberal policies conducted for several decades now, aspire to a better world, one that is democratic and respectful of others and that ensures a durable future for the planet's peoples and nations; because we believe that peace is linked directly to wealth being shared fairly throughout the world, we most strongly condemn terrorist acts, and in particular those that have just been committed in New York and Washington. And we do this all the more strongly because terrorism has always been used to halt and to end democratic freedoms.
