Hotel Workers' Union Facing Massive Layoffs; Seeks Relief Package (Sep.
24, 2001)
With U.S. airlines having laid off nearly 100,000 workers following the
terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, hotels that
rely on air-traveling tourists to fill rooms are now laying off thousands
of workers. Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees (HERE) President John
Wilhelm has said that up to half of his union's 265,000 members could face
layoffs as a result of the dramatic drop in air travel and tourism in the
aftermath of the attacks.
