Greetings Economists,
Jim Devine writes,
awhile back, Carrol Cox reacted to my comment that I'd heard that after 911
Prozac usage was up -- by saying that it takes weeks before it (and I guess
other SSRIs) have an impact. I agree: however, it's a symptom of the nature
of our times that it was _prescribed_, despite the long lag time. Further,
there is an immediate placebo effect.

What Carrol was trying to get across is the myths about depression and
symptoms that people ascribe to hard times. He was making an important
disability consciousness remark. We rely upon metaphorical expressions of
what we feel are the instabilities in our society. Keep in mind that these
metaphors are basically unexamined concepts that rests upon assumptions
about mental disabilities and society that can have very negative impact
upon disabled people. In addition as Carrol makes clear there are mythic
proportions to those metaphors that might be dispelled with more realistic
examination of what is being said.
thanks,
