It seems like US foreign policy is run like one huge proactive hedge fund
for strategic resources, hedging, managing and manipulating things like 'oil
risk'. If they get Venezuela back to US-compliant status and take over Iraq,
they could almost say they don't give a damn what happens to Saudi Arabia
and its oil.

Especially if Russia keeps on pumping and the various Caspian projects come
on line.

And all of which makes the US's domestic energy plans even more
comprehensible (since at least temporarily higher oil prices then justify
increased domestic activities). As for the distress all the shocks might
cause the EU or Japan, well, whatever happens you can be sure events will be
used to justify US calls for further deregulation and liberalization in
Europe and E. Asia designed to be beneficial to US interests.
