I am personally abjectly grateful for the invention of the washing machine....oh, so, so, grateful. BUT I do not want this gratitude to be used as an end-all argument for the universal superiority of machines over manual labor. Like I said, the mechanization of labor is not a simple issue. I do not think it's always a good idea and I am not comfortable with arguments that generalize from women in Mali (or my appreciation of washing machines) to the industrial or the "green" revolution.
