I don't see what the athletic competence of baseball players has to do with the value of their labor power. How much money do the TV networks, the advertisers, and the makers of the products advertised make off of them. Besides, I believe a huge proportion of mlb players are only in the majors for a few years (under 5) and never get even the average salaries. (And I believe the situation is much worse for football players.) Has anyone written seriously on the economics of professional sports?
A few years ago there was fuss made about the outrageous salaries of airline pilots, many of whom are now unemployed or working under worse conditions for less money. Carrol
