There was a discussion Pen-L a year or two ago on what Marx & Engels (or mid-19th c. writers in general) _meant_ by the word "science." Probably the word had much less rigid denotation than it does now. Perhaps it meant only "systematic with some reasonable attempt not to confuse descriptions (or naming) with explanations."
