Ill temper aside, I agree with Carrol about the quality of the "happiness" piece.
The unfortunate thing is not the overblown freshman comp style, but the notion that in order to "speak to the people" one must write like this. Not true. Orwell is an excellent counter example: a man who could write plainly but not vapidly.
