And if "progress" is defined as something other than getting an A on a test, helping others can actually help the "bright" students make significant progress --- not simply in a social or moral aspect, but (as I'm sure many here know) one learns nuances and different perspectives, masters shaky information, gains confidence, etc., when helping others.
