this sounds as if the DP or its leadership actually has the ability to plan nefarious plots and then use Kucinich as as a fig-leaf. But this missed the nature of the DP (which is a bourgeois party, I agree). In most countries, there are a variety of different parties: bourgeois conservatives (often called "liberals"), Christian (or Islamic) democrats, social democrats/labor, peasants, urban professionals, etc. Well, in the US, there's an established two-party system, which means that a bunch of different interest group/parties are stuffed into two and only two categories (or on the powerless fringe) as parts of coalitions. Usually we leftoids complain about the two-party system, and justly so, but we often forget what this does to the DP: with the GOP being the bourgeois conservative party (and with its coalition with fundamentalists and the like currently falling apart), all of the other "parties" are stuffed into the DP. The DP is a heterogeneous coalition of different interest groups, dominated by relatively "far-sighted" bourgeois interests. The coalition piece means (1) that it's very hard for the DP leadership to put nefarious plans into effect and (2) that people like Kucinich can exist on the fringes of the party. -- Jim Devine / "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti."
