What Micheal described used to happen when I was growing up in Izmir,
Turkey in the 1960s and 1970s, too. My brother and I used to play
soccer with the son of our grocer, went to the same school, although
neither of us were in the same classroom with him, and our families
knew each other rather well. I was able to buy even cigarettes and
alcohol from the grocery store for my parents even when I was six or
seven years old, on credit. We used to pay our debt in the beginning
of each month, after the previous month's book was closed. Being a few
days late had never been an issue. I don't know what happened if you
couldn't pay your monthly bills a few months in a row, since we were
able to make good on our debt.
