He was one of the "New Historians" who had critical things to say about the Israeli role in the Israeli-Arab dynamic. However, he was always a Zionist and was severely chastened by the conclusion of the Oslo process in 2000, which he blamed on Arafat, and lost his optimism that a settlement of the conflict could be achieved for the forseeable future.
