Speaking of US politics: at the movies this afternoon, I saw a
rock-video ad for the U.S. National Guard. It's called "Warrior" and
has the standard shots of helicopters in Iraq, National Guard soldiers
smiling at Iraqi kids (and vice-versa), and the NG putting out fires
in the US. U.S. soldiers did not used to be portrayed as "warriors"
(except in the ironic phrase "weekend warriors" to refer to the NG).
This is a Christian Right thing and seems especially strong in the Air
Force (a Christian Right stronghold). The old NG rock video was about
"citizen soldiers."

Kid Rock played the music. I wonder what the Christian Right thinks of
_him_. He seems a total beer-nut.

By the way, the movie we saw was "Bottle Shock," which was quite
enjoyable and funny in an off-beat way. I guess it would be for people
who liked "Little Miss Sunshine." It's no "Hamlet 2," but few things
are.
