An out of state friend E's girlfriend S lives on partial disability. Labor day weekend she started suffering terrible pain. She delayed going to the hospital because Medicaid has some form of cost sharing where she had already used up her benefit for August and would have had to add thousands to her medical debt to go in during that month. Some policy person decided that Medicaid patients needed skin in the game to discourage overuse of their benefits.
So she toughed out the pain until September 1. Labor day, she went to the emergency room, and was admitted with sepsis which had reached her heart. She is unconscious most of the time. A couple of days ago the doctors prepared her boyfriend for her probable death, though now they say she may survive if her kidneys continue to hold out long enough for the antibiotics to work... Oh and her landlord just served her boyfriend with a notice for them to quit, since the rent due September 1 was not paid. Since she is unconscious, she can't do anything with her disability check.
