> Mandarins, Guns and Money > By Mark Mazower "send lawyers, guns, and money" -- Warren Zevon.
good review (though I haven't read the books). two points: 1. Rostow was actually a pretty good economic historian when he started. He seems to have taken his story of the English industrial revolution and assumed it applied to everyone (the take-off). (BTW, what about his brother Eugene Victor Rostow, named after E.V. Debs? I guess their parents were leftists of some sort.) 2. social science is still on the march in service of US international ambitions. See the article in last month's HARPER'S about "human terrain teams" who use anthropological/sociological knowledge in order to conquer Afghanistan & Iraq (with little success). -- Jim Devine / "Nobody told me there'd be days like these / Strange days indeed -- most peculiar, mama." -- JL. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
