good review (though I haven't read the books). two points:

1. Rostow was actually a pretty good economic historian when he
started. He seems to have taken his story of the English industrial
revolution and assumed it applied to everyone (the take-off). (BTW,
what about his brother Eugene Victor Rostow, named after E.V. Debs? I
guess their parents were leftists of some sort.)

2. social science is still on the march in service of US international
ambitions. See the article in last month's HARPER'S about "human
terrain teams" who use anthropological/sociological knowledge in order
to conquer Afghanistan & Iraq (with little success).
