FWIW, I wasn't "appealing to God" but instead using a common figure of
speech. Since my working hypothesis (one that's worked very well so
far) is that no deities exist, I deliberately did not capitalize
"god." (or maybe I should -- is "god" a proper name, like John or
Jim?)
