Messer-Kruse, Timothy. 2004. Banksters, Bosses, and Smart Money: A
Social History of the Great Toledo Bank Crash of 1931 (Columbus:
University of Ohio Press).

His description of the banking crisis in Toledo is a marvelous parallel
to today, with excessive speculation, self-dealing, and close
connections with the Republican government in Washington.  The title
alone is worth something.
