How about something intangible? Like hope or inspiration? Or is
Marxist theory too materialistic to accommodate such things?

CB: This is an understandable , but vulgar reading of the Marxist sense of 
"materialism".   Lenin  wrote reams about "class consciousness" , "class 
conscious workers", and even "spirit".  Lenin also famously said "Without 
revolutionary theory , there can be no revolutionary movement".   Marxists 
understand the need for enthusiasm, esprit de corps, _comradeship_  to succeed. 
 

It is unfortunate that the American term "idealism", in the sense of aspire to 
high political purpose .gets confused with Engels' sense of philosophical 
idealism.  Marxists are for political idealism , not philosophical idealism.
