According to a friend who lives in the centre of Athens, it looked and felt more like Bagdad or Beirut...what started it was the cold-blooded murder of a fifteen year old boy in downtown Athens by a cop, but it seems this is just the spark that set the field on fire. Apart from the economic crisis that hit every capitalist country in this world, Greece in the last decade has been doubly hit by crisis bad government . Scandals that involve the church, ministers, the judicial system, with billions of euros spent on private interests with an everyday cost to the greek citizen. Last week there was an uprising in the prisons that pack people like sardines (mostly immigrants or drug addicts) saying there's not enough money to build more when we all see priests in cooperation with ministers investing millions of euros in villas, businesses, and using public land to do so. Greece has the highest cost of living in Europe and 1/3 or 1/4 of the average european salary (need to be checked). Greek citizens however, vote the same people in again and again.
