24. RE: private vs. state colleges  (Perelman, Michael)
<<We subsidize students to do 2. (middle class union cards) because of
the political
influence of the middle class and because it would be unfair to overtly
deny access to credentials to those without money.

We know why we do 2. (see above). This is forgivable but not
particularly defensible. The real question is why society bothers with
it >>

I'm not sure it's forgivable and is a partial failure of the ed.
system ( for example the elementary school parodied in the Simpsons ).

Not unlike the thread on astrology (sic) we are distracted by the
reproductive and legitimating activities of false consciousness, like
reading one's horoscope (Adorno) or even responding to stuff like
banning Simpsons "underachiever" t-shirts in the actual elementary
schools.

Ann ( who wishes she were provost ( not dean ) of Mars University in
Futurama - "Knowledge Brings Fear" )

I do of course endorse the parodic subversion of the Simpsons over the
vulgar satire of Family Guy and South Park. The latter simply
reproduces the ideological terrain: those gender, race and class
divisions not unlike Limbaugh et al with only random sparks of
intelligence.
