Many of you probably know about this, mathematics has been intricately
associated with gambling for centuries. Here is a popular book
reference:

Bernstein, Peter L. 1996. Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of
Risk (NY: John Wiley & Sons).

Farmer used a computer built into a shoe. There is an entertaining book
about Farmer's exploits in Las Vegas, The Eudaemonic Pie by Thomas A
Bass. As I recall, it wasn't that great about explaining the science.

A Wikipedia article mentions an unbelievably early (1960-61) similar
experiment with a wearable computer by Claude Shannon of Bell Labs fame
and Edward Thorpe, a mathematician who became an early hedge fund
leader.
