Time to Rise Up Against Corporate Personhood
The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week on the issue of
whether business corporations should be granted First Amendment Free
Speech "rights" to directly contribute (some say "invest") in
political campaigns from their corporate treasuries.
The case was Citizens United v Federal Elections Commission
Proponents claim the views of business corporations aren't fairly
heard in the political arena. By extension, business corporations
supposedly don't have enough political influence.
It's time to say ENOUGH!
* NO FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS FOR CORPORATIONS!
* NO CORPORATE PERSONHOOD "RIGHTS"!
It's time to efficiently, effectively, and energetically, EDUCATE,
ADVOCATE AND ORGANIZE
What you can do (3 items)
1. Educate yourselves on the case and corporate personhood. Here are
a few resources:
* Video links of a recent program in Western Massachusetts
discussing the Sept 9 oral argument before the US Supreme Court

* POCLAD, WILPF, et. al. Amicus [friend of the court] legal brief

challenging corporate personhood [a must read!]

Because what you are suggesting is that the courts who created
corporations as persons, gave birth to corporations as persons, and
there could be an argument made that that was the Court's error to
start with, not Austin or McConnell, but the fact that the Court
imbued a creature of State law with human characteristics.

2. Take Action
* Invite friends to come together to study this issue
* Raise this issue with any/all groups you are members of/donate to
* Write a letter to the editor of your daily/weekly/alternative
paper
* Call a talk show (both "liberal" and "conservative" -- who in
their right mind after all feels corporations should have Bill of
Rights!
* Post this to your Facebook, MySpace, and any other social
network site you are a member of
3. Forward this email to your lists and encourage them to educate
themselves...and to subscribe to the POCLAD email list!
It's about time this issue sees the light of day! Legal obscurity
has been one of greatest advantages to maintaining corporate
personhood. It's time for a change!
THANK YOU!
