I'm a doctor (like many of you) and make $54,000 a year. I educate other doctors who go on to make $300,000 a year within a decade after leaving my classroom. I am a social medicine doctor, a Doctor of Philosophy. They are biomedical doctors, doctors of capitalist reproduction.
We both claim to be primary care doctors. But they fall far short. I find sickness etiology in social relations. they find it in reified flesh. Mine is the real primary care medicine. It addresses the primary roots of sickness. Indeed, the primary causes of preventable illness, injury and disease – capitalist social relations – need to become the “primary cares” of medicine. The Alma Ata Declaration, for all its imperfections, came close to implying as much. As David Sanders, MD, argued long ago, the fundamental causes of ill health are out of the control of [the biomedical profession], and “indeed, any open recognition of the real causes would call into question the very system that allows [medical professionals] to own and market their commodity” (Sanders p. 117). They need to be overthrown. Why does it make sense to have "enterpreneurial" doctors? I didn't say that there was anything WRONG with it. It's just part of apitalism: "entrepreneurial" types of all sorts are ground up by the achine (except for a minuscule minority). Luckily I belong to a ector where the remaining feudal institutions help defend me from ecoming a commodity. - im Devine / "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti."
