The MTA is getting its budget slashed, and it seems that programs like the
student pass are going to be discontinued.

This reminds me of 1975 (or was it 1976?) in Morelia, when the private bus
system increased the fares.  Middle and high schools revolted for a week or
so.  Lots of leafleting and impromptu meetings on streets and plazas,
explaining the actions to the public. Buses were seized by the students and
parked in front of our shools.  Students fraternized with the drivers, who
were mostly poorly paid wage workers. The bus system was expropriated by the
state and fares went to almost zero.
