Illustrated in detail in Schindler's List. A movie nominally about the
Holocaust but purveying the much more timely message: "You're lucky if
you have a job. And if you do, it's better to work for a rational
capitalist (Schindler) than a lunatic (the other guy), who shoots people
for breakfast.
Yes, we should be grateful that the capitalists provide us with jobs.
Endlessly grateful.
The flaw in Joan Robinson's epigram is that it connects capitalist
penetration of the 3rd world with job creation. If that were the
case, then there wouldn't be so much violence and resistance--most
particularly now reflected through political Islam but as Maoist
and Castroite insurgencies in the past.
Except for China and India, capitalism is not a job-creation
engine. Indeed, the ability of these countries and the Asian
Tigers until recently to create jobs had a lot more to do with
statist or outright socialist economics providing an
infrastructure for growth.
Ultimately, A.G. Frank was correct when he said that imperialism
develops underdevelopment.
