The flaw in Joan Robinson's epigram is that it connects capitalist penetration of the 3rd world with job creation. If that were the case, then there wouldn't be so much violence and resistance--most particularly now reflected through political Islam but as Maoist and Castroite insurgencies in the past.

Except for China and India, capitalism is not a job-creation engine. Indeed, the ability of these countries and the Asian Tigers until recently to create jobs had a lot more to do with statist or outright socialist economics providing an infrastructure for growth.

Ultimately, A.G. Frank was correct when he said that imperialism develops underdevelopment.
