Ruth Simmon, president of Brown University and the only black board
member at Goldman Sachs quit her board seat recently; coincidentally
the school newspaper has been publishing some highly critical
editorials of her association with the widely-despised firm..

Hopefully this a sign of the times that Goldman Sachs is fast becoming
a pariah..

If there has been a poster child for shameless corporate excess in the
throes of the Great Recession, Goldman Sachs — payer of $17 billion
worth of bonuses so far this year — must be it. Fortunately, the
firm’s outlandish compensation, heedless disregard for its civic debts
and cynical attempts to save face with negligible charity projects
have been well-documented in mass media and need no further mention
here.

But still, December means bonus season. So there’s no better time to
risk beating a dead horse to expose an unsavory truth about the
connection between Goldman’s hilariously out-of-touch bonus payouts
and one of our University’s dearest and most esteemed figures.

The board of directors at Goldman Sachs is divided into a handful of
committees responsible for scattered elements of the firm’s
operations, including the Compensation Committee, the body
specifically responsible for the $17 billion of bonus packages this
year. There are 10 voting members on this Compensation Committee, some
big names and titans of industry among them. But included in their
ranks is someone a little more down-to-earth: one Ruth Simmons,
President of Brown University.
