As Max himself noted in his post recently on the "high point" of the '60s, the BP represented a major breakthrough in left politics in the United States. They solved in principle the problem of "Black & White Unity" in mass struggle: an all-black political formation, strongly rooted in the black community, that committed itself whole-heartedly to the overall project of the left. The Panthers, incidentally, _never_ advocated leftits _initiating_ armed actions: that was why Fred Hampton devoted the last months of his life to telling Black high-schools students what a bunch of shits the WEathermen were.
